Useful LGBT Resources
In addition to GSA, LGBT- or ally-identified students and educators may want to seek out other organizations which focus on LGBT issues beyond the Newton North campus.
A list of these resources—which include support groups, political organizations, events and periodicals, among other things—can be found below.
Hotlines/Helplines
- 1-800-347-TEEN is the National Gay and Lesbian Youth Hotline. It runs weekend nights only.
- 1-888-340-4528 is the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Helpline. It runs seven evenings a week.
- 1-866-4-U-TREVOR is an around-the-clock LGBT suicide prevention helpline.
- 617-267-0900, extension 311, is run by the Fenway Community Health Center in Boston and is for victims of violence.
- 1-800-399-PEER, the Peer Listening Line, is also run by Fenway Health Center.
Social and Support Groups (free ones!)
- The Boston Alliance of GLBT Youth (BAGLY; see bagly.org for directions, etc.) is a safe place for socializing with other LGBT youth which holds a variety of events and meetings.
- The Boston GLASS Community Center (bostonglass.org) is a similar "drop-in center" which provides some counseling, discussion groups, anonymous HIV testing and volunteer/intern opportunities.
Transgender-identified or questioning people may like to consider joining groups which are specifically trans-oriented, and which can help deal with those specific issues.
- Boston Area Trans Support (BATS; see their website) is a peer-run support group for transgender/transsexual/questioning people. It meets at MIT in Cambridge.
- Compass (geocities.com/ftmcompass) is another support group, but specifically for transpeople assigned female at birth. It is not specifically youth-oriented.
